Goodwill-Suncoast Wins DOC Work-Release Contract

Program Facilitates Successful Reintegration of Felons Into the Community

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. - Goodwill Industries-Suncoast, Inc. has been awarded a state Department of Corrections contract to operate a 70-bed residential work-release program that will help ease the transition of convicted nonviolent felons back into the community. The contract is worth $800,000 per year for five years.

Starting Sept. 15, Goodwill-Suncoast will begin offering the Probation and Restitution Center Program at its Tampa Bay Community Corrections Center in St. Petersburg. The program will serve men and women in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties who have been released from incarceration but ordered by courts to participate in residential work-release programs.

Participants in the program will live at the Goodwill corrections center for three to six months while working at least 20 hours per week. Goodwill will help participants find employment and offer a variety of life skills classes and counseling that participants will attend when they are not working. During the aftercare phase of the program, participants will attend classes once a week for three to six months while living and working in the community. A portion of participants' earnings will go to pay restitution for their crimes.

Goodwill-Suncoast also operates a similar work release program for the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department as well as a residential substance abuse treatment program at its St. Petersburg corrections facility.

The mission of Goodwill Industries-Suncoast is to help people achieve their full potential through the dignity and power of work. Goodwill-Suncoast operates 18 Goodwill stores that sell donated merchandise. This successful retail operation helps support Goodwill-Suncoast's many human services, including workforce development and employment programs for people who have barriers to employment, five subsidized housing communities, two group homes and three work activities centers for developmentally disabled adults, and two community corrections facilities. Goodwill is consistently ranked among the top charities for percentage of revenue channeled directly to programs.
